Roger WORROD (Wuzzy) > I had a Karel Zehman-Terry Gilliam dream about this, so I had to include it.
Roger WORROD (Wuzzy) > My negative side...
Roger WORROD (Wuzzy) > The HotPot started off with a large fish, onions and Morning Glory to make the 'bouillon'. Then we cooked fish fillets, prawns and Thai Basil to serve over our rice. A few quartered tomatoes later and we were on to the chicken (in spite of the avian 'flu) and coriander, followed by beef, water mushrooms and tofu.
Roger WORROD (Wuzzy) > Chinese Moslem Supper. Just 50 metres away from the Red Wall Hotel, this was my favourite meal in Beijing. Chinese Moslem owners, poor as church mice, they were the ones who turned over one of their two rooms to a Christian Iranian refugee family who had been living on the streets... the father had finally received a permit to travel to Sweden where the family hoped to start a new life. In my travel diary I talked a lot about the warmth and kindness of the Chinese family, who welcomed me back like an old friend when I came through Beijing in April on my way home.
Roger WORROD (Wuzzy) > Forbidden City or Imperial Palace. This corner was a 90-second walk from the Red Wall Hotel where I was staying.
Roger WORROD (Wuzzy) > This 80yr-old English lady was living a life-long dream: flight to Shanghai, train to Beijing and straight on to the TransSib. Her nephew looked 3 times as exhausted as she did, but that was at least partly due to a touch of Montezuma's Revenge. She was forever collecting 'remedies' from the train attendants and buying stomach-settlers at every stop. During his indisposition, we shared a doubtful meal in the Russian RC and and a couple or five undoubted vodkas.
Roger WORROD (Wuzzy) > We shared a compartment from Beijing to Ulan Bator. She's a news presenter on Mongolian TV. Her brother and work colleague were further back in First Class. Both girls have studied German in Munich, but they both spoke good American English... taught (I presume) by Mormons; there were several 'on mission' on the train with us, returning to the Mongolian capital..
